What the PED Directive Regulates
The Pressure Equipment Directive applies to equipment with a maximum allowable pressure greater than 0.5 bar. It covers: pressure vessels, steam generators, industrial piping, safety valves, and pressure accessories. The directive establishes essential requirements for design, material selection, manufacturing, testing, inspection, and documentation.
PED Classification and Categories: I to IV
PED classification is the key step: it determines the conformity procedure and the potential need for a notified body. Equipment is assigned to four categories based on fluid type, pressure, and volume:
- Category I – conformity through internal production control
- Category II – assessment modules with in-depth documentation
- Category III – mandatory involvement of a notified body
- Category IV – continuous production control with a notified body
- Article 4(3) – equipment excluded from CE marking but subject to sound engineering practice
