ErP Directive 2009/125/EC and Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 – Ecodesign Consulting.
The ErP Directive 2009/125/EC (Energy-related Products) and Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 (ESPR – Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation) establish a regulatory framework for setting ecodesign requirements applicable to products that have an impact on energy use. They do not directly define performance requirements: this is done through implementing Regulations specific to each product category. MTM Consulting supports manufacturers and importers in navigating this complex regulatory system and obtaining CE marking.
Which products does the ErP Directive and ESPR Regulation apply to
The ErP Directive and ESPR Regulation apply to “energy-related” products, i.e., all products that during their life cycle consume, produce, transfer or measure energy, or that have an indirect impact on energy use. This includes: electric motors, pumps, fans, compressors, lighting equipment, transformers, heating and air conditioning equipment, household appliances and much more.
ErP and ESPR implementing Regulations
For each product category, the European Commission adopts specific implementing Regulations that set minimum energy efficiency requirements and other ecodesign parameters. These regulations are updated periodically to tighten requirements in line with technological progress.
In this context of continuous evolution, the new ESPR regulation (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation) further expands the scope of ErP — applicable from July 18, 2024 and intended to gradually replace the ErP Directive by 2030 — introducing stringent requirements on circularity and overall product sustainability.

Manufacturer's obligations
- Verification of the applicability of the ErP Directive (progressively replaced by the ESPR Regulation) and the specific implementing Regulation
- Calculation and demonstration of compliance with ecodesign requirements
- Preparation of technical documentation and supporting documentation
- CE declaration of conformity with reference to the ErP Directive (progressively replaced by the ESPR Regulation) and the applicable implementing Regulation
- Affixing of CE marking on the product
- Registration in European databases (e.g., EPREL for certain products)
