What is the ATEX Directive and to whom does it apply
Directive 2014/34/EU regulates the marketing of electrical and mechanical equipment, protective systems, and components intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. It applies to manufacturers, importers, and distributors of Group I equipment (mines with firedamp) and Group II (all other explosive atmospheres), as well as protective systems and safety devices for use in ATEX zones. Equipment is classified into categories (1, 2, 3) indicating the required level of protection.
ATEX zone classification
Zoning is the starting point of any ATEX project. Zones are classified based on the probability and duration of the presence of explosive atmospheres:
- Zones 0, 1, 2 – for flammable gases, vapors, and mists
- Zones 20, 21, 22 – for combustible dusts
- Zone 0 / Zone 20: explosive atmosphere present continuously
- Zone 1 / Zone 21: occasionally present under normal operating conditions
- Zone 2 / Zone 22: rarely present or for short duration
