What is Life Cycle Assessment
Life Cycle Assessment evaluates the environmental impact of a product or service at every stage of its existence: from raw material extraction, to production, transportation, use, through to recycling and final disposal. It is governed by two fundamental international standards: ISO 14040, which defines the principles and general structure of the study, and ISO 14044, which specifies the technical and methodological requirements for conducting a complete and consistent LCA. The LCA study provides objective data: it does not automatically guarantee low environmental impact, but enables strategic measurement, identification, and management of identified critical issues.
The four phases of the LCA study
Each LCA study is structured in four distinct and interconnected phases, each essential for the overall validity of the analysis:
- Definition of objectives and scope: the purpose of the study, the product system analyzed, and the boundaries of the analysis are established
- Life Cycle Inventory analysis (LCI): collection and quantification of all input and output flows of the system (raw materials, energy, emissions, waste)
- Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA): calculation of environmental impacts associated with the inventory, across different categories (climate change, acidification, land use, water consumption, and others)
- Interpretation: critical analysis of results, identification of the most critical phases, and formulation of conclusions and recommendations
