What is carbon footprint
Carbon footprint is a parameter that estimates the greenhouse gas emissions caused by a specific product, service, organization, or event. It is expressed in tons of CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e), a measure that standardizes the climate-altering potential of different greenhouse gases into a single comparable value. The main gases included in the calculation are those defined by the Kyoto Protocol: Carbon dioxide, Methane, Nitrous oxide, Hydrofluorocarbons, Perfluorocarbons, Sulfur hexafluoride.
The two types of carbon footprint
MTM Consulting offers the calculation of both types of carbon footprint, with specific approaches and methodologies for each:
- Product Carbon Footprint (CFP): calculates the greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout the entire product life cycle, from raw material extraction to final disposal. It is possible to focus the calculation on only part of the life cycle, depending on specific objectives. The reference methodology is ISO 14067
- Organization Carbon Footprint (CFO): measures the greenhouse gas emissions generated by a company on an annual basis, divided into three macro areas derived from the GHG Protocol. The reference methodology is ISO 14064-1.
